Siti Muharam replaces Al Bilali Soudan....
Unfortunately, we have received the message that Al Bilali Soudan had to cancel the Africa Festival 2023 due to logistical problems.
We are therefore proud to welcome Siti Muharam & The Unguja All Stars.
Siti Muharam is the great-granddaughter of the legendary Siti binti Saad (c. 1880-1950) who innovated and popularized the taarab from Zanzibar. Siti binti Saad was the first woman to perform taraab in Swahili instead of Arabic and the first East African singer to have this music recorded. Because of this, the "Mother of Taraab" was admired by many people. Other artists followed in her footsteps, such as the equally phenomenal Culture Musical Club & Bi Kidude, who performed at the Africa Festival Hertme in 2009.
Siti Muharam 'golden voice' was discovered and in 2020 she released the album 'Siti of Unguja'. With this album she made her international breakthrough and in 2021 she was elected 'African Artist of the Year' by the renowned magazine Songlines.
Siti Muharam & The Unguja Allstars will play at the Africa Festival Hertme on Sunday 2 July
