Lecture: the ancient Mali-empire and its musical heritage

You may have noticed: the 35th Afrika Festival Hertme features no fewer than five groups from Mali: Salif Keita, Tartit, Bamba Wassoulou Groove, Kankou Kouyaté and Ballaké Sissoko. On Sunday 9 June at 15.00, we will host a lecture by programmer Rob Lokin at 't Spookhoes (Openluchttheater Hertme): The ancient Mali empire (14th century) and the music that emerged from it. Admission is free.

Mali's history dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries. A society emerged that flourished for two hundred years and then went down again. Musicians were important to tell history in song and sing people's praises. At that time, a form of music developed that lives on to the present day and leaves its mark on contemporary music. Knowledge of Mali's history is important to understand and appreciate contemporary music.

Rob Lokin takes you with images, sound clips and stories to those times, centuries ago and also to present-day Mali where he has travelled many times. While on his last trip to Mali in 2017, he visits the 'Festival sur le Niger' in Segou and also the village of Kela, close to the border with Guinea in the heart of old Mali, where many musicians live. He meets many old acquaintances who once played in Hertme.

Rob Lokin worked as a tropical doctor in Africa from 1976-1980, travelled extensively there and has been a programmer of the Africa Festival in Hertme since 1991.
