The Zawose Queens - Tanzania

The Zawose Queens, consisting of Leah and Pendo Zawose, are talented musicians from Tanzania who convey the rich musical traditions of the Wagogo people. Their music is characterised by flowing polyrhythms and mesmerising polyphonic singing, supported by traditional instruments such as the chizeze violin, ilimba thumb piano and ngoma drums.

Daughter and granddaughter of the legendary Dr Hukwe Zawose, one of the greats of Gogo music, Leah and Pendo continue the family tradition. Their debut album, "Maisha", released on 7 June 2024, marks a new era for the Zawose family, with female members taking the lead as singers and performers for the first time. In 2009, Pendo Zawose and her family performed with us at the Afrika Festival Hertme.

"Our father told us to be true to our traditions and what our ancestors taught us."

"Maisha" is a collection of 11 original songs that capture the essence of Gogo music. The album offers a blend of traditional sounds and subtle electronic elements, creating a unique and danceable experience. The lyrics address themes of everyday life, pride in tradition and connection with nature.

With their music, the Zawose Queens aim not only to share their cultural heritage, but also to set an example for other female artists in East Africa. They strive to combine traditional and modern elements to create something new and present their heritage to the world.
