Elida Almeida - Cabo Verde
Cape Verde
In 2014 Elida Almeida sang at a bar in Praia, Cabo Verde, where she went to university and worked to support her young son and family. In the audience was José da Silva, head of Lusafrica Records and producer of Cesaria Evora. Two months later, Elida started recording her debut album 'Ora doci, Ora margos' (Sweet times, Bitter times). The record is filled with original songs that reveal a surprising depth for the then 22-year-old singer, sung with her unique, warm and soulful voice.
The song 'Nta Konsiqui' went viral and earned her an RFI Prix Découvertes Award. Since then, her musical career skyrocketed resulting in two more acclaimed records, a collaboration with other Cape Verdeans like Lura, Lucibela and Djodji, a release with Brasilian singer Flavia Coelho and performances in Africa, Europe and the US.
